The Struggle With Literacy

Firsthand we have bore witness to the struggles of high school students in their English classes - most notably, in writing assignments. From argumentative wording to translating thoughts into cohesive passages, there is a clear lack of preparation and paucity in skill adequate to not just passing one's class, but to excelling and standing out among peers. With college admissions around the corner and lives heavily intertwined with writing/speaking skills, the vast majority of students are unprepared. We must come to terms with the fact that classroom writing instruction alone fails to sharpen our literacy skills for the demands of our futures. In fact, many of the most successful students/college applicants have received some form of external writing support/instruction, whether that be through tutoring, prep programs, or private college consultants. Frankly, the average student is at a severe disadvantage and will struggle with demonstrating themselves among the highest levels of competition.
